ELEVATE

Each session consists of 3 sections:

  •  a team building, problem-solving brain-teaser activity to stimulate lateral thinking.
  •  exposure to teaching materials around Domestic and Family Violence.
  •  a reflection period where participants can recap the key messages of the lesson while sharing a small morning or afternoon tea.

What is ELEVATE?

ELEVATE is a primary prevention program designed to educate young people of the social, personal, physical, emotional and coercive nature of Domestic and Family Violence.  It will empower young people to make better life choices in their relationships.  Participants will be given practical advice seeking assistance for both perpetrators and victims of Domestic and Family Violence in Queensland. ELEVATE is targeted at youth aged 12 – 17, is a gender neutral, whole of class program designed to educate young people of the social, personal, physical and emotional harms caused by domestic and family violence. The program provides advice on how young people can seek support if they identify that they or others are in an unhealthy relationship.

The program is delivered by experienced QLD Police Officers with the assistance of teachers and QLD Blue Light Facilitators. The program delivers six hours of content over four sessions with each session incorporating a problem-solving activity to stimulate lateral thinking, exposure to teaching materials around D&FV and a reflection period where participants recapture the key messages of the lesson while sharing a small morning/afternoon tea. The four lessons sequentially explore the comprehensive nature of domestic violence and its various forms.

ELEVATE uses a variety of carefully orchestrated ice-breaker style activities at the start of each session to stimulate lateral thinking and trust between participants and facilitators. The aim is to create a relaxed and safe environment in which students can express their feelings and opinions without negativity.

Participants are given information regarding Domestic and Family Violence and an understanding of the various forms it can take. They will participate in frank discussions around the effects of Domestic and Family Violence on families, individuals and communities

Most young people equate Domestic and Family Violence with physical assaults. ELEVATE ensures students understand that verbal, emotional, sexual and other types of abuse can be just as debilitating. Students are shown how to recognise negative behaviours in both themselves and others.

Participants will be taught that respect is the key to healthy and happy relationships. Each participant will be shown that everyone deserves to be given, and expect respect.
