QBLAI hosted it’s first Youth Leadership Camp from the 10th to 14th July 2014. We have held many Youth Development camps over the years, and also sent Qld participants to other Leadership camps, however this is the first Leadership style camp we have actually hosted.
Staff from Bornhoffen’s Leadership Development Centre wrote a two day program for us designed to:
- Enhance communication skills through group development activities.
- Develop participant’s sense of team through shared experiences.
- Build self-confidence through encouraging participants to step outside their comfort zone and ‘have a go’.
21 Young people aged 15 – 18 years participated in group discussion and theory sessions as well as abseiling, creeking, high ropes and other adventure based activities.
The camp was a terrific success. The young people were chosen for their leadership potential and commitment to their communities, and boy did it show. Everyone participated 100%, and rose to any challenge they were given. The friendships that were formed over just a few days were amazing, with quite a few tears shed on the final day.
Participants were presented with certificates at a dinner on the last night. QBLAI State President A/Inspector Steve Watterson attended to meet with the group and present the awards.
Due to the success of this initial camp, we ran our second one in June/July 2015.
This one was held at the PCYC Leadership Development Centre in Yeppoon. We had a similar itinerary to the first camp, with a reward day consisting of a trip to Great Keppel Island. Hosting the camp in Yeppoon made it easier for participants from North Qld to attend.
As long as funding permits we will make these camps an annual event.
